360 Living collaborated with renowned architects, McLean Quinlan, for the exquisite remodelling of old stable and outbuildings in this beautiful Oxfordshire project. The layout was updated and adapted to create a secure courtyard with two new additional wings housing a garage, store and stylish pottery studio.
The landscape to one side of the property meant that the new sections of the building had to be cut into a bank. This allowed the courtyard to slip gently into the garden without disturbing the surrounding area. The new buildings follow the ridge height and roofline of the existing stables and are clad with vertical cedar boards. Together, the buildings form a neat u-shape, bordered by a beautiful feature brick wall. The symmetrical layout addresses the main house, with a slim pedestrian entrance to the West and vehicle access from the South.
The landscape inside the wall provides a practical flat surface within the courtyard. The studio space is orientated to make the most of the superb views to the South over the rolling landscape. Internally, the oak structure is from a tree grown, felled and seasoned on the land.
The result is a fully functioning stable serving various animals, including alpaca, chickens, pigs and sheep. To prevent the host of animals that roam the grounds from wandering into the occupants kitchen, a recessed landscape feature creates a vertical barrier while preserving an uninterrupted view of the scenery beyond.
